Following the success of this course in Australia, where it was accredited by the ACEM and CICM and ACRRM, it is now being launched in the UK.

The Procedures Course is a 2 day course that will teach you how to confidently perform a wide range of basic and complex resuscitative procedures. It is a collaboration between The Alfred Trauma Unit, Alfred Emergency & Trauma Centre, National Trauma Research Institute and Monash University. It comprises phase 1 of the Alfred Shock, Trauma & Resuscitation Program (A-S.T.A.R) which focuses primarily on procedural skills.

The course will be held at the University of Manchester, located in the heart of Manchester, offering state of the art labs and classrooms for procedural teaching on fresh-frozen donor cadavers.

Sessions will have a heavy emphasis on acquiring hands-on skills for the management of the multiply injured complex trauma patient.

Day 1:

  • Registration
  • Course Introduction
  • Lateral Canthotomy and Cantholysis
  • Burr Hole Craniotomy
  • Emergency Surgical Airway (Cricothyroidotomy)
  • Resuscitative Vascular Access (MAC line / RIC line / Intraosseous access)
  • Temporary Transvenous Cardiac Pacing
  • Thoracostomy and Chest Tube Insertion
  • Day 1 summary and questions

Day 2:

  • Registration
  • Resuscitative Thoracotomy (pericardial decompression, cardiac access & haemorrhage control)
  • Escharotomy
  • Pre-Hospital Limb Amputation
  • Resuscitative Hysterotomy
  • Participant Practical Revision (Optional)
  • Day 2 summary, questions and feedback

What is included?

All materials, CPD, workbook/manual, badge, instruments, insurance, coffee/tea and meal(s), protective clothing, medical devices and/or implants, specimens (including transport and documentation), aftercare, faculty, technicians, admin support, pre-read materials, assessment papers and follow-up contact.
