Donating your body to a medical school is a valuable gift – your donation will become an important resource for training healthcare professionals or for research. We only accept donated tissue from consenting adults.
The Human Tissue Authority (HTA) is the UK regulator for human tissue and organs. They do not collect or receive bodies or other human materials, but they license and inspect the organisations that do. Their role is to make sure that these organisations remove, store, and use brains, bodies and tissues in an appropriate, respectful and well-managed way, and that the wishes of individual patients and their families are respected.
You can add an image, with a description alongside such as this.
The HTA’s regulation helps ensure that tissue is stored to high standards, to be of most use to healthcare training and research. London Medical Education Academy only use HTA approved labs.
We know that more people are willing to donate in the knowledge there is an effective regulator that monitors and inspects organisations against certain standards, and The Academy fully complies with all regulations, as well as ethical guidelines.
Body donations are highly valued as it is the ONLY time training can be truly risk-free while giving exactly the same haptic feedback as operating on a live patient. A donated body can be used for a number of purposes, which may include:
Anatomical examination – teaching students or healthcare professionals about the structure and function of the human body.
Research – scientific studies which to improve the understanding of the human body.
Education and training – training healthcare professionals on surgical techniques.
Anyone can decide to donate their body, and medical schools welcome the offer of a donation. If you are interested in donating your body, you will need to contact a medical school for further information and a consent form. For information about how to contact your local medical school, enter your postcode into the HTA search facility, email or call HTA on 020 7269 1900.
